Self-Simulating Robot Steps toward Self-Awareness

The robot used the self-simulator internally to “contemplate and adapt to different situations, handling new tasks as well as detecting and repairing damage in its own body.” Photos show a time-lapse composite image of a “damaged” robot arm performing pick and place, and the undamaged arm successfully placing objects in a tray. Next steps reportedly include having the robot simulate and contemplate its own thinking process, which would appear to be a significant step toward machine sentience. The study was DARPA supported.
