Girls Like Bots

Girl Scout Troop 1145 of Brookfield, CT recently visited Robot Village in New York City, where each built OWI's Jungle Robot to help earn their Science In Action patches.

David Greenbaum, "Mayor" of Robotvillage, (a robotics store, www.robotvillage.com), said “it’s great to see kids get excited when they take on the challenge to build their own robot. Unlike video games, where kids ‘play’ with technology, in our store, kids actually get to ‘explore’ technology by creating finished robots using their hands and minds. Knowledge and discipline are absorbed into the experience, from learning about motors and sensors, to patience and self-confidence."

Young girls are as interested in technology and science as boys, and they particularly enjoy educational “hands-on” activities. Robots provide scouting and educational communities with opportunities never before available. They inspire kids of all ages to explore science, engineering and technology by offering unique creative opportunities. It’s a new level of learning and understanding that quickly peaks the interest of young minds.

"Making robots was challenging but fun because you have to think about the tools you need to use to put them together," said 10-year old scout Kylie Nimer.

"I can't believe how excited the girls in our troop were to actually build their own robots," said Carol Kolesar, leader of Girl Scout Troop 1145. "I was impressed with their enthusiasm as they rose to the challenge. The girls were totally engaged and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. This experience has opened their minds to a whole new world and encouraged them to consider paths of study that will be important to their futures."
